What CoolPeel treats
Rough texture
CoolPeel resurfaces the outermost layer of skin, so rough patches and a dull surface are the first things to change. This is the result most people notice in the mirror around day four.
Enlarged pores
The appearance of pores tightens as the surface renews and new collagen forms underneath.
Sun damage and uneven tone
Light sunspots, redness and blotchy tone are softened. Deeper pigment and years of sun damage are a job for full CO2 resurfacing.

How CoolPeel works
A traditional CO2 laser removes whole layers of skin and heats the tissue underneath, which is what causes a week of redness and peeling. CoolPeel uses the same CO2 wavelength in fractionated, very short pulses. The energy reaches the superficial layers and stops, so there is far less heat left in the skin and the untreated skin around each micro-column heals the treated spots quickly.
The treatment runs on DEKA's SmartXide® CO2 platform, the same device Epic IV uses for deeper resurfacing, set to its lightest, fastest mode.
CoolPeel at Epic IV is performed by our registered nurses. Your settings are chosen at the consultation, based on your skin and what you want to change. The clinic's medical director is Dr. Christine Rongey, MD.
What to expect, day by day
The timeline below is the one our clinicians give at the consultation. Everyone heals a little differently, and we are a phone call away if anything surprises you.
Consultation
A clinician checks your skin, your history and any cold-sore history, and plans the series. You get the price before you book.
Arrival
Your skin is cleansed and numbing cream goes on for about 45 minutes. Baseline photos are taken for your chart.
The treatment
Protective eyewear on, then the laser runs in passes across the face. You feel warmth and a quick snapping sensation, intense for a few seconds at a time. A full face takes 15 to 20 minutes; smaller areas are quicker.
Right after
Skin is pink and hot, like a moderate sunburn. You go home with a gentle cleanser, a bland moisturiser, mineral sunscreen and written aftercare.
Day 1
Moderate redness, slightly puffy, warm and tight. Rest, moisturise often, sleep with your head raised.
Day 2
Redness fading to pink. The skin feels slightly rough and you may see tiny dark dots; that is the treated micro-columns setting. Most people are back at non-public-facing work.
Day 3
Fine, dust-like peeling, sometimes itchy. Do not pick. Most people are back at public-facing work.
Days 4 to 5
The glow. Skin looks fresh and bright, pores look smaller, tone is more even. Still no retinoids or acids, still daily SPF 30 or higher.
Weeks 2 to 6
Texture is clearly improved by week two. Fine lines are softer and pores more refined by week four to six, when the next session in the series is due.
